Jaw Surgery and Your Smile

Maxillofacial Surgery and Your Smile

Removing the shortcomings of the face can profoundly influence your smile which in turn can reveal a better face. These shortcomings are the consequences of either congenital and hereditary causes or various injuries. This chapter elaborates on some of these gum and face deformities and their treatments.

Mandibular Prognatism

Mandibular prognatism is a condition in which the lower jaw (i.e. the mandible) is more protruding than the above jaw or the maxillae. This could impact a person's chewing, talking, and facial beauty. It is advisable to undergo surgery together with orthodontic treatments so that the occlusion would be ideal once the treatment is complete.

Mandibular Retrognatism

As the term implies, mandibular retrognatism is the exact reverse of the aforementioned case in which the lower jaw is receding and the form of the face becomes convex. Through surgery, the lower jaw can be brought forward thereby correcting the ratio between the upper and lower jaws.

Chin Deformities

Just as the forehead and nose, the chin plays a major role in forming the profile and outside contour of the face. Recession and undersize of the chin is a more common case than its protrusion. In cases where these deformities are not due to prognatism or retrognatism (described above) and the problem lies in the form and size of the chinbone, corrective surgery could be performed on the chin itself. For large and protruding chins, a part of the bone can be removed and made smaller. For smaller and receding chins, on the other hand, grafting and bone transplant can be used to enlarge and correct the chin.

Cheek Augmentation

Beautiful cheeks enhance the appeal of the eyes, nose, and lips and contribute a mysterious touch to the face. Maxillofacial surgery can correct undersized cheeks and give them prominence and overall harmony with the face.

Rhinoplasty

The nose is the most prominent part of the face and would undermine a beautiful smile if oversized, over-protuberant, and deformed. This may even deform lip coverage of the teeth. Correcting nose deformities can thus be accounted as a major step towards beautifying the face and the smile.

Blepharoplasty

The prime sign of aging is the gradual introduction of wrinkles around the eyes and eyelids. Wrinkles can be readily removed by plastic surgeons through blepharoplasty.
